Alma P. Burton - newspaper article

Alma P. Burton, superintendent of Alpine School District, received his doctor of education degree from the University of Utah, in recent exercises held there [1957]. His thesis was entitled, "One Hundred Years of Education in the Alpine School District." Dr. Burton is a son of May P. [Pexton] Burton and the late Thomas H. Burton. Dr. Burton began his teaching career at the Fielding High School in Paris, Idaho. He served as a professor at the Brigham Young University from 1948 to 1954, and has been superintendent of Alpine School District Schools since the spring of 1954. Superintendent Burton is a life member of the National Education Association. He is also a member of the American Association of School Administrators, the Utah Education Association, Alpine Education Association, and the Society of Superintendents of Utah. His business experience includes assistant manager of J. C. Penney Company in Nephi, office clerk for the Utah Oil Refining Company, Assistant Purchasing Agent for the Utah State Agricultural College and Secretary to the Director of the Extension Service for the State of Utah. He was charter president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Nephi and is a charter member and a charter board of director member for the Kiwanis Club at Orem. Presently, Dr. Burton is member of the High Council of Sharon Stake and has been active in the LDS Church. He resides in Orem, with his wife, the former Olea R. Morgan, and their five children, Barbara, David, Ann, John and James. He is also well known as one of the leading Mormon historians today and has written the following publications: "Mormon Trail From Vermont to Utah,' "Karl G. Maeser, Mormon Educator," "Readings in LDS Church History," "Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith," and articles for the Sons of the Utah Pioneers' Magazine and The Instructor.
